Founded in 1939, Nagoya University is one of Japan’s leading research universities and the youngest of the nation’s seven former imperial universities. From its campus in the heart of central Japan, it has built a reputation for original, world-class research nurtured by a free and open academic culture. That culture has produced an extraordinary record of discovery: six of the Japanese researchers awarded a Nobel Prize in the twenty-first century have worked at Nagoya University, among them Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano, inventors of the blue LED. Today the university is also one of the most internationally engaged in Japan, with close to 200 partner institutions worldwide and one of the highest proportions of international students among the country’s national universities.
Much of the university’s research strength is concentrated in its dedicated research institutes, each a national and international hub in its field: the Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (RIEM), which studies how the body and brain respond to environmental stress; the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability (IMaSS), which develops advanced materials and devices for a sustainable society; and the Institute for Space–Earth Environmental Research (ISEE), which investigates the linked environments of the Sun, the Earth and space.

International students can join Nagoya University without prior Japanese through its G30 (Global 30) International Programs — a suite of full degree courses taught entirely in English. Running since 2011, they span fields from automotive engineering, physics, chemistry and biology to the social sciences and Japan-in-Asia studies. Students are admitted each October and take Japanese-language training from their first year, so graduates leave with both an internationally taught degree and a footing in the language and culture of their host country.
